“Mischief Emerging” is the first sculpture in the Hatchling series, capturing the exact moment a young dragon breaks into the world with equal parts curiosity and attitude. Cast in solid bronze, this piece shows a newly emerged dragonling perched on the cracked shell of its egg, claws hooked over the edge as it pulls itself up to survey its new domain.

The detailing is deliberate and bold: textured scales, a ridged spine, curled horns, and a set of small wings that already hint at future trouble. The polished, high-contrast eyes give the hatchling a sharp, alert expression—like it’s sizing up its next move.

The egg itself is sculpted with deep fracture lines and natural contours, grounding the creature with a sense of real weight and motion. The patina brings out the layered textures across both shell and scales, giving the entire piece an aged, mythic presence.

This is a compact, display-ready bronze with plenty of personality—an ideal starting point for collectors who want to follow the Hatchling series from the very beginning.

In Southern Colorado we have lots of cholla cactus and in the summer months we have burrowing owls in the prairie dog towns. They are shy little guys that fly if you get close. But with patience you can get them accustomed to your presence and watch their behaviors and see their curiosity of the surroundings come out! They are quite the hunters of course, but at times they also enjoy just hanging out and watching the day go by!

They are quite entertaining to watch run across the barn and up onto the walls as they hunt for tiny insects. I came across a badger skull while hiking one day and imagined one hanging out in the skull after it traversed the rocks and fallen pine cones.

As a veterinarian, I was fortunate enough to have worked with many bearded dragons and I must say, most have a delightful personality! They are quite personable and easy to handle. In this piece I wanted to capture a bit of that inquisitive, easy going attitude.
